With the addition of a community support program in 1983, BWDH is now able to provide a full range of services for people with disabilities.

The Vision of BWDH is to provide the highest quality services and supports to people with special needs and those involved in their lives. In an effort to fulfill its Vision, BWDH's Mission is to:

Be recognized as the provider of choice for housing, respite, and community-based support services for people with special needs.

Employ and develop staff members who support the vision of the organization, are dedicated to achieving excellence, and who reflect and represent the values of Blue Water Developmental Housing, Inc.

Establish and maintain relationships with other service providers, community service groups, funding sources, advocacy groups, and other organizations necessary to advance and enhance the Vision and Mission of Blue Water Developmental Housing, Inc.

Continuously improve the quality of services based upon input from the stakeholders and the individuals served by the organization.

The development and delivery of services at BWDH is organized around five Core Values to help establish and maintain the highest standard of professionalism and services to consumers. These Core Values include:

Respect for Individuals
imageBWDH cannot succeed without people. It is people who give this organization its meaning and its people who will make it work. BWDH believes in the idea that treating people well – with dignity, respect and with expectations of growth and development – is fundamental to the acheivement of a satisfying work experience and essential to assuring consumers are treated with respect.
The Importance of Innovation
BWDH believes that it can demonstrate new, creative and innovative ways of supporting, serving and assisting people. Innovation, creativity and inherent risks involved in doing things differently, but responsibly, are the hallmark values of BWDH.
The Importance of Teamwork
Despite the requirements of running an organization with various levels and lines of authority, those connected to BWDH believe that everyone affiliated with the organization can offer perspective, insight and input into improving what we do, how we serve and support people and the quality of our efforts. To that end, important and creative ideas may originate at any level within the organization.
Continuous Improvement
The aspiration of excellence is also an important value. Excellence is grounded in the quality of our efforts to serve, support, encourage and recognize one another as important contributors to the overall success of BWDH. Improvement requires continual work in monitoring and, as necessary, modifying our policies, procedures and practices.
Community Commitment
BWDH sees itself as a valued and integral part of the communities it serves. BWDH seeks meaningful ways to provide human services in response to uner-met or unmet community needs. BWDH believes that accountability to and responsibility for the local community is essential.

Our Services

imageBlue Water Developmental Housing, Inc. uses person–centered planning to promote choice, self–determination and the empowerment of each individual in creating their own plan of service.

Community-Based

BWDH's Community-Based Program offers support services for individuals with disabilities who reside independently or with their families in the community. The services provided focus on personal self sufficiency, independence and promotion of one's integration into the community. These services enable individuals to live in the least restrictive manner.

Enriching Community Life Program

The purpose of this program is to empower, educate and support individuals with disabilities so that they may live as integral and respected members of their community.

Through the Enriching Community Life Program, para-professional staff provide community-based support that is designed by the consumer using the person-centered planning process. Consumers have the opportunity to choose from a variety of curriculum based skill sessions. Each session provides "real life" experiences to increase individual skills such as problem-solving techniques and to establish connections in the community. Class choices are based on consumer interest and need.

The Vision of BWDH is to provide the highest quality services and supports to people with special needs and those involved in their lives.

Residential

BWDH's Residential Program offers community living in the family–like settings of its twelve group homes (See Locations for group home contact information). All residential homes are supervised twenty–four hours a day by staff and are licensed by the State of Michigan. Trained residential aides and an interdisciplinary team of professionals work together to coordinate Clinical Services such as Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Medical, Dietary, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Psychological and Behavioral as needed. Staff also assists consumers with Skill Training in order for them to develop the tools necessary to live as independently as possible. Through Service Coordination, BWDH manages intakes, professional assessments, Plans of Service, linkage and monitoring, and advocacy services as needed for each individual.
